Garden Clubs
Years ago the tradition of garden clubs came into play in the societal world of the Deep South. Ladies would meet regularly at one of the member’s homes in the area and would have lunch or tea time while sipping tea and talking about their gardens and other aspects of life. These sophisticated ladies would wear their beautiful little spring and summer hats and dress to the hilt while spending an afternoon with others who shared their same interests. Today, some of the same traditions are still holding up in the traditional Garden Clubs throughout the world. However, the dress code is becoming slacker in some areas. Garden clubs have lost their appeal among some of the young women of the day who normally would have been likely candidates for the older women to consider for membership of the exclusive garden clubs. The younger generation who would possibly be expected to join a garden club in their affluent neighborhoods has different agendas. Many of the younger women have their own careers and if they don’t then they are likely to spend most of their time out with friends doing what new money does best—shopping until the credit cards are maxed and the husband, or his family, pays the bills to enable another round of shopping! It’s a shame to lose garden clubs but it doesn’t look like the interest is there among the more affluent women anymore. Gardening has lost its appeal among the affluent because it is now expected that rich women have a gardener and many of them will seldom work in the garden so why have a garden club? Gardening appeals to the middle to upper class so maybe the Garden Clubs will eventually appeal to the younger crowd in the middle to upper class economics. However, it is doubtful the garden clubs of yesteryear will resurface once they are truly a thing of the past.
